Emerald Island Seashore

B&W conversion of what was at the end of the boardwalk to the beach from our resort. I almost didn't takes this due to the 30 knot wind that was blowing sand into me and the camera. Not my comfort zone. DW5D9076_1.JPG

Sunrise Behind Oceanana Pier

So the goal was to to get down towards Oceanana Pier before dawn and get the sun rising up from the north-east and coming up UNDER the pier. I grossly miscalculated. The Sun decided to instead rise behind the beach from the direction of Beaufort. Not happy about that, but it turned out OK. I guess winter is when what I wanted to happen happens. Under Oceanana Pier

Waves crash under Oceanana Pier. Once, there were a lot of piers stretching out into the ocean from Emerald Island. Hurricanes took them all out, one by one. Oceana is the only one left, and it is a gold mine for the restaurant that manages it and sells fishing permits. IMG_1682_1_done.jpg

So this pier is mainly for fishing. This is a big business to the resaurant at the other end that sells permits at $25 a pop. Hundreds of feet of pier and fisherman shoulder-to-shoulder on both sides, and mostly year round. You do the math. IMG_1634_1.JPG

Fort Macon, Infrared

This fort has a long history beginning in 1826, with rebuilding several times through the decades leading to it's largest role in the U.S. Civil War. It's official role ended following WWII. Infrared. IMG_0794_1.JPG

Mortar Fires at Fort Macon

BANG! This is only a demonstration, but actual mortars flew miles, were amazingly accurate for the day, and caused great damage. This "mortar" is actually a basketball painted black and landed a few dozen yards beyond the inner walls of the fort. DW5D9097_1.JPG

Atlantic Bridge at Dawn
